Canberra: The best city in the world?: The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development looked at nine measures of "wellbeing" including education, jobs, environment and income. Australia topped the countries list. Critics 批评者 of Canberra's rating might ask why its notorious climate was not considered. Neither was the exorbitant ( exorbitant [ɪɡˈzɔ:(r)bɪtənt] an exorbitant price or amount of money is much more than is reasonable. It meant borrowing money at an exorbitant rate of interest. exorbitant wage demands. ) cost of rent, nor the city's notorious "boredom factor". The Lord Mayor of Melbourne, which in August was named the world's friendliest city, did not hold back on his opinion直言不讳 of Canberra's rating. "This is the best-kept secret in the world," Robert Doyle said. "None of us knew about it. "My view is, I think the bureaucrats might have got to the people(get to someone to cause feelings, esp. suffering or disgust, in someone: The heat was beginning to get to me so I went indoors.) who were doing the study and they've fudged the figures动了手脚," he joked. The MP for Wannon said there was plenty to do in Canberra, such as visiting art galleries and museums. But he agreed the weather was challenging at times. South Australian senator Nick Xenophon scoffed at the study, calling it "a waste of time and money" and "self-indulgent自以为是的, 陷入自我的 crap". If each category is equally weighted加权, 权值, from access to services, education, income, environment, health, safety, housing, and civic engagement, the ACT is the top ranking region in terms of well-being. The findings have been debated on Twitter. Last year, Canberra was rated as Australia's second best city to live in in a survey commissioned by the Property Council of Australia. ACT Chief Minister Katy Gallagher said the New York Times article added "weight to the argument that Canberra is one of the most livable cities in the world." "It is nice to be reminded sometimes that Canberra has a lot of positive characteristics and when you rank us against other cities in the world that we come out really strongly," Ms Gallagher told the Canberra Times.

失明前看遍世界: Nine-year-old Ben Pierce is slowly, steadily going blind. So his family has embarked on an amazing "bucket list" adventure, trying to pack his mind full of visual memories to last a lifetime. Thanks to the kindness of an Alaska Airlines pilot, Ben recently checked off one major goal: Watching the Northern Lights北极光. Staring into the Alaskan sky on a fall night, he was in awe. "They were amazing, like watercolors painting the sky(going across the sky). It was really pretty," Ben told TODAY. For his mom, the experience was bittersweet. "I love watching his face and seeing his reaction," said Heidi Thaden-Pierce, 37. "But it's also a little bit heartbreaking to see it, knowing why we're there. I wish so much that we didn't feel this urgency to go on these trips now." The urgency is there because Ben is going blind, a complication of his premature birth. So he's come up with a list of things he wants to see before he loses his vision.  Doctors warned the family that a baby born this early probably wouldn't make it活不下来. Then, as Ben hung in there坚持着, 努力着, they cautioned there could be many challenges ahead: he could be blind, deaf, or develop cerebral palsy and other problems. Nine years later, Ben is perfectly healthy, except for his eyes, his mom said. While still in the NICU, he developed retinopathy of prematurity, a potentially blinding eye disorder that affects preemies早产儿(preemie (ˈpri:mɪ) or premie A prematurely born infant.). With each growth spurt, Ben is losing more vision.  He's already very nearsighted, incredibly light sensitive and has lost most of his peripheral vision, Thaden-Pierce said. She and her husband are preparing him for the moment when he may not be able to see at all. "It's hard for us as parents to comprehend and emotionally process情感上接受(comprehend I. to understand something. How could you possibly comprehend the difficulties of my situation? comprehend that: Laura gasped, hardly able to comprehend that her brother's life was in danger. fully comprehend: We fully comprehend people's anxieties.). For a 9-year-old kid, it's a challenge," she said. That's where Ben's wish list comes in. A therapist recommended that the family give Ben lots of visual memories to make it easier for him to describe things and interact with the world if he becomes blind. The family has been able to check off many of the items, often thanks to generous strangers and corporations. The Northern Lights excursion was made possible by Alaska Airlines, for example. "He also told us he dreams about what he's been seeing," she said. "He's knows that he's trying to store up memories and he's working really hard to do as much as he can to cement them in his mind."

A mother got knocked out by a guy who was trying to snatch her baby. The Bay Run is a popular pathway that encircles much of Iron Cove and is located in the inner-western suburbs of Sydney, Australia. The Bay Run is particularly popular with joggers, walkers, roller skaters and cyclists who enjoy the pleasant waterside scenery whilst participating in exercise. It is 7 kilometres long and passes through the suburbs of Rozelle, Lilyfield, Haberfield, Five Dock, Rodd Point, Russell Lea and Drummoyne. The Bay Run provides excellent views of Iron Cove for its entire course as it constantly hugs the shoreline. The Bay Run plays host to the annual Bay Run fun run, a community event that brings people together in the name of health, fun and exercise. A SYDNEY mum has faced what could have become a parent's worst nightmare as a stranger allegedly attempted to snatch 抢夺, 抢去 her 14-month-old son as she jogged along the Bay Run in Sydney's inner west. Gladesville resident Christine, 41, told Kidspot that she was running her usual route around Balmain near the City West Link with her son in his pram at around 10:30am today, when a man running towards her veered out of the bike lane and grabbed 抓住 her pram. "He was so strong," Christine said. "I just remembered thinking, what am I going to do if he gets my son? How am I going to stop him?" Before the man could wrestle the pram out of Christine's hands, a second man on a bike rammed himself between Christine and her alleged attacker. The first man let go of the pram and ran. "The second guy yelled 'what the hell are you doing?' but he was gone," Christine remembers. "Then he kept saying to me 'are you all right, are you all right?' I said 'I don't know' and just started crying." The kindly Samaritan who intervened to save her son – who remained asleep throughout the incident – then walked Christine 20 minutes back to her car. "I didn't even thank him or get his name," says Christine. "I was in too much shock. With everything going on in the world today, I kept thinking, what if that guy had killed me or my child? What if he was looking to steal a random off the street?" Christine described the man as being around 175cm tall, wearing dark glasses, a blue scarf covering his face, a blue parka and jeans. "I really hope it was someone who was perhaps a bit disturbed, but I have a mentally handicapped brother精神病, 神经病 and an autistic niece and I know what it's like when someone like that approaches … it can be unexpected but it's done with [kindness]," says Christine. "This felt very aggressive." After reaching her car, Christine says she called her husband then reported the matter to the police. Although she's extremely shaken, Christine says she won't let this experience change her. "I don't think that you should hide yourself away躲起来 when something like that happens," she told Kidspot. "It could happen to anyone in the wrong place wrong time." She hopes, however, that other parents in the area will remain vigilant. Her world nearly changed in a minute. A mother out for a run with her baby son has faced what many of us could not even bear to think aboutattempted child abduction, her baby nearly snatched right before her eyes. It was unseasonably warm yesterday and there were hundreds out enjoying the balmy spring day. As Ms Jones wrestled 抢夺 with the man over her son's pram a cyclist intervened, slamming his bike in between the terrified mother and the man. The cyclist yelled at the man "What the hell are you doing?" But the man ran from the scene. Ms Jones told News Limited the kind passerby comforted her as she cried. Ms Jones says the incident shook her to the core. She says that she hopes it was however someone who was "a bit disturbed" rather than anything more sinister.
