We wrote Annie Proulx a fan letter and asked her what she thought about us optioning the story. Larry believed actors' representatives were dissuading them from doing the part—they called it career suicide for a straight actor to play a gay person. We just thought that was ridiculous. The short story struck me as having more humor than the film, but perhaps that was due to the novelty of reading about two gay cowpunchers falling desperately in love with each other, leaving the sheep to fend for themselves. Gyllenhaal: The script for Brokeback Mountain had been around for a number of years, as is often the case with really interesting films. I'd actually met with another director, who was attached to it maybe four years before Ang came along. In 2001, [producer] James Schamus picked up the option, and he and I tried to get some directors to sign on. People loved the script—we kept hearing that—but no one would commit. It was definitely a movie that needed to be made. It afforded an opportunity for society, particularly American culture, to confront 直面 its core issues with the gay community. Placing the confrontation in a milieu ( milieu [ˈmi:ljɜ:] 社会环境 a person's social setting or environment. the particular people and society that surround you and influence the way in which you behave. ) that is traditionally perceived as hetero male–John Wayne and the Western cowboy–was a brilliant stroke by Proulx. Anna Hathaway: And I read the script, and was, of course, blown away by it, but I remember thinking, Alma's not my part–I'm Lureen. It's not dissimilar to ( [dɪˈsɪmɪlə(r)] different from someone or something else. two very dissimilar languages. dissimilar to: a weaving technique not dissimilar to the way fishermen make their nets. ) the feeling of meeting someone that will become very important to you on some soul level. It had that same magnetic pull 吸引力 that I feel for certain very important people. And like all of those wonderful feelings, it made me hot, it made me flush, it made my blood pound 豪情万丈, 血网上涌. Hathaway: When I'm done with an audition, I can usually tell if I've left the door open for another actress to come in behind me, but I left that room knowing that I had closed it, locked it, and welded it shut. I just knew it was mine. People were struggling to see me as anything other than a Disney princess at the time, so to get the endorsement from得到认可 Ang made me realize that maybe I could take this a bit further. Ossana: The first day we filmed that scene where Michelle's character is on the toboggan and falls off the sled, and Ennis is with her—they're laughing; well on the third take, Michelle fell off the sled, and at the bottom of the hill she was crying. She'd twisted her knee, and we had to call someone to take her to the hospital. Heath was not about to let her go alone, and as he was getting into the vehicle with her he was smoothing her hair back. I remember him looking at her, and she looking up at him with these wide eyes 长大的眼睛. She was almost startled by the attention he was giving her, but you could see it every day from thereon. For him it was truly love at first sight. He was so taken with her. It's funny how recent it was, but at the time we were very far away from this burgeoning humanist moment that we're having now with gay rights. Gyllenhaal: That line ["I don't know how to quit you"] has moved, it has been mocked, it has been everything in between, but I remember coming out of that scene, off that ridge of the hill 山脊, and seeing a number of the crew, some of whom didn't even know what the movie was about, crying. When I first read that line, I was like, What is that? Now I realize that anybody who has loved knows what that feels like. The interesting part of casting us at such a young age was that we didn't completely understand what we were involved in, and that's the beauty of the movie as well. Gyllenhaal: What Ang took and manipulated in the most beautiful way is those techniques we have as actors—one of us more improvisational 即兴的, and the other more strict in his approach. So there are all these intricate things happening, where Ang's taking who we are as actors and putting them into the characters, and taking pieces of our personality as well. On the set, that proved to be really interesting at times, and also, at times, really frustrating, for both of us. Lee: The night we filmed the scene by the river where they talk about Ennis's childhood, Jake was in a mood to improvise a little bit, and deviate from his lines 游离出去, and Heath just got really upset—really upset, like his whole progress was disrupted. Jake is more of an improv actor—try this, try that—but Heath's preparation was really deep. He kept his teeth clenched and his face scrunched up ( scrunch up v. I. That's why some people complained that they couldn't hear what he was saying. He had to shoot a light-hearted comedy right after we wrapped—Casanova. He told me he just needed to unwind. Ossana: I said to Heath, "Ennis doesn't know why he feels so horrible, why he feels like he's going to be sick. It's not a conscious realization yet—he's suppressing his love for this man so hard, but this is why he feels like he's going to vomit, why he's punching the wall. Hathaway: I remember getting to watch the shot of Heath walking across their front yard, which is really just dust and dirt more than anything else, and Heath had decided that at some point Ennis had been in an accident and had a limp. It was so subtle, and it looked like he'd had this limp for about four years, and I just remember looking at Heath in that moment, and thinking, That is one of the greatest actors that has ever been.
偷猎非洲狮子王: Dr Palmer claims he had trusted his local guides to meet legal guidelines on his trip to Africa, during which he shot Cecil with a crossbow on July 1 before skinning and beheading him. The two Zimbabwean men appeared at Hwange magistrates' court charged with poaching, about 435 miles west of the capital Harare and were both released on bail of $1,000. The Zimbabwean prosecutors' documents accuse Bronkhorst of failing to 'prevent an unlawful hunt' and documents say Bronkhorst was supervising while his client, Palmer, shot the animal. The court documents made no mention of Palmer as a suspect. Meanwhile as the controversy raged发酵 and Dr. Palmer still remained out of public sight, he issued a letter of apology to his patients for any inconvenience. Explaining that he was a 'life long hunter' who refrained from talking about his passion because he is aware of the deep passions it stirs, Dr. Palmer said that he was sorry his dental practice had closed. The social media opprobrium continued on Wednesday, when Mia Farrow posted an ill-advised message to Twitter containing Dr. Palmer's business address in Minneapolis. The controversial 70-year-old screen legend took such umbrage with ( take umbrage (at something) [ˈʌmbrɪdʒ] to be offended by something. They're liable to take umbrage if we don't invite them. ) Dr. Palmer's decision to shoot and kill Cecil on a $50,000 hunt that she took the dangerous decision to advertize where his wife and children lived. Farrow quickly had second thoughts and deleted the address and amended the tweet to show a Twitter picture of his dental practice in Bloomington, Minneapolis. Tributes to the butchered lion have poured in thousands of miles away at Dr Walter Palmer's office in Bloomington, Minnesota, where protesters dressed as 'dentist hunters' also threw stuffed lions at his house. One of the strongest denunciations 指责, 批评 came from the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), which said on its Twitter account that Dr Palmer should hang for 自裁谢罪 killing Cecil. 'If, as reported, this dentist & guides lured #CeciltheLion out of the park with food so as to shoot him on private property because shooting #CeciltheLion in the park would have been illegal, he needs to be extradited, charged, &, preferably, hanged.' 'I want you to know of this situation and my involvement. In addition to spending time with my family, one of my passions outside dentistry is hunting. I've been a life-long hunter since I was a child growing up in North Dakota. I don't often talk about hunting with my patients because it can be a divisive 意见不一的, 有分歧的 and emotionally charged topic. 'In early July, I was in Zimbabwe on a bow hunting trip for big game. I hired several professional guides and they secured all proper permits. Ire against Dr Palmer first erupted when he was identified as the shooter by The Telegraph on Tuesday. Emmanuel Fundira, the president of the Safari Operators Association of Zimbabwe, confirmed at a news conference on Tuesday that Dr Palmer is wanted for the death of Cecil. The much loved big cat whose death sent Dr Palmer into hiding was wounded by an arrow after he was allegedly lured out of the national park by the hunter's bait. After tracking the injured beast, Cecil was eventually found and shot dead. His corpse was then skinned and the head hacked off as a trophy. However, speaking to the Star Tribune on Tuesday morning, Dr Palmer said he was unaware of Cecil's fame and expressed regret but denied any illegality and laid any blame firmly at the door of his guides. According to The Independent, he added: 'The head – his trophy – has been impounded 没收 and confiscated as evidence for the court in Victoria Falls.' And to add to the outrage surrounding the death of Cecil, the future of the cubs of his pride are now thought to be at risk. The cubs could be killed if the pride is taken over by another male lion. 'The saddest part of all is that now that Cecil is dead, the next lion in the hierarchy, Jericho, will most likely kill all Cecil's cubs,' Mr Rodrigues said. 'Both the professional hunter and land owner had no permit or quota to justify the offtake of the lion and therefore are liable for the illegal hunt.' Cecil was one of the park's oldest lions and was well known for his striking looks and friendly nature. According to local legend, Cecil was kicked out of his pride and wandered alone until he met another lone lion called Jericho.
